As part of the continued investment in system development, we are now seeking to recruit Actuarial Trainee for 23 month contract role within the actuarial service team in Canada Life Europe.

The Position:

Managed by the Canada Life Europe Head of Actuarial Controls and based in Dublin, the Actuarial Services and Projects Team is responsible for maintaining the integrity of data held on the administration system and providing actuarial services to the business, both on an ongoing basis and as a key contributor to projects. This includes:

  • Performing calculation using spreadsheets to support the requirements of the business areas
  • Identifying and resolving data issues on the Administration system
  • Providing Actuarial support to any projects relating to existing business, maturity calculations, ongoing administration or system integrity

The successful candidate may be involved in any part of the above work of the Actuarial Services and Projects team.

The Person:

The successful candidate should have the following:

  • A degree (min. 2.1) in actuarial studies, mathematics or statistics
  • Experience of Prophet or PAXUS would be an advantage but not a necessity
  • Knowledge of programming would be an advantage
  • Be highly numerate
  • An analytical approach to problem solving
  • Strong interpersonal skills

This role is to act as a Fund Governance Specialist for the Pensions & Investments Business. The role holder will report to the Fund Governance Team Lead and support the Head of Finance, both of whom are qualified actuaries, to provide commercial support to the Pensions & Investments Business. The role holder has responsibility for oversight of all aspects of fund governance for funds offered on the Irish platform.

About Role

The purpose of the role is to ensure that all funds are operated in a way which is consistent with any policyholder material and expectations of how the fund would be managed.

The role holder will need to develop and support appropriate governance structures to ensure that fund approvals are appropriate to customer needs and support the franchise value of the Company. The role holder will develop a sound understanding of the Aviva Pensions & Investments Strategic Business Unit, its products and the market environment.

The role holder will be required to engage and liaise with various fund managers who are on the fund platform so that a detailed knowledge and awareness of the funds can be developed. They will also need to build relationships internally to support an effective fund governance framework. The successful candidate will need good interpersonal skills along with the ability to communicate and influence at all levels. Unlike other traditional actuarial teams, this role provides the opportunity to interact with a wide scope of people, both internally and externally.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain actuarial experience, business experience and excellent knowledge of investment markets.

The Role holder will

  • Liaise with fund and relationship managers and other teams within Finance and Distribution to support an effective fund governance framework
  • Monitor fund performance and characteristics to ensure funds remain appropriate to maintain on the platform
  • Review the impact of fund modifications and implement actions required
  • Ensure fund literature (including key features such as risk ratings) are a true and accurate refection of the fund’s investments

About You

Ideally we would like the successful candidates to have an Actuarial degree with previous work experience as part of university work placement.

The role holder should have excellent communication skills. You will have strong commercial acumen coupled with a high level of financial understanding and awareness. You should have competent IT skills – in particular Excel spreadsheets are used extensively by the team.

An Actuarial graduate with some work experience preferably in a life insurance environment would be desirable.
